why we meet
Ten years ago, we did a survey of the membership. The results still apply today. here are the results:
- Background: We conducted a survey of our membership during February and March 2013 and just under half of the membership responded.
- Why do we come to the dances? Mainly to dance, of course. Socializing and dinner are a distant second and third.
- Which dances do we like the most? The dance preferences are not surprising, with waltz, East Coast swing, foxtrot and cha-cha at the top, and hustle and polka at the bottom.
- What about the cost? We prefer better amenities over lower cost by 3-to-1.
- Band or DJ? We don’t care; a slight majority would pay more for a live band. We currently do not charge more for a live band vs. a DJ.
- Do we take dance classes? A third take no lessons at all, while 14% take about 3 group lessons and 21% take about 3.5 private lessons.
- How often do we dance? About once a month, although some of us are out there more than once a week. Most of us make it to the Debonair Dancers dances, with only a few couples missing more than two dances last year.
what are the dances like?
Often we start with a short dance lesson. Music is classic ballroom songs and usually the type of dance is called out before the music starts. No one is judging anyone and all levels of dancers are welcome. Many couples bring drinks to share. Table conversations are lively and fun. We like to dance, yes, but we also have events like a champagne, chocolate or beer tasting. Our April President’s Ball typically has champagne tasting, and our October event has beer tasting.
even more about us
Membership is by invitation only. Couples desiring to join Debonair Dancers are sponsored by a member-couple and usually attend one or more dances as guests of the sponsoring couple. If a guest couple is interested in joining, they submit an application to the membership committee. On approval and the payment of the membership fee, the new couple is accepted as members. Currently there is a limit of 100 couples, mostly due to the size of available dance floors (200 people dancing requires a minimum of 3,000 square feet of floor space)
